The Pebble and the Pond

A pebble falls into a pond.
The pebble knows that it fell,
But does not know from where.
The pebble knows it met the pond,
And now rests in the mud at the bottom.

A pebble falls into a pond.
The pond knows its surface was breached,
The ripples testify in a repeating chorus.
The pond knows it has met the pebble,
And will keep it in the mud, along with other heavy things.

The pebble and the pond know
That they have been in contact,
That they have been forever changed,
Their destinies now forever linked.
Perhaps it has always been so.

The pebble and the pond do not know
Where they came from, nor what they are,
The oceans and clouds that the pond once was,
The star and the mountains that the pebble once was.
They do not know themselves, but still they know.

The ripple chorus slowly silences.
The mud vault sinks and settles.
Testimonies that no one and everyone heard.
The event forgotten, but forever known.
