I learned early on in college a skill that has served me well throughout my adult life. It is summarized in the mantra “Protect your energy”. What that means for me is to pay attention to the energy you give folks and what, if any, energy is given back. Your article here reminds me of that lesson and I’m so sorry for what you’ve had to go through in order to learn it. I’m so happy you have though!

That being said, I understand why it was easier for me to learn. I’m a tall, intelligent, semi-attractive white guy. I have so much privilege and I’m the “default”, so it’s way easier for me to walk through life with a “I’ve got nothing to prove to anyone” mentality, because no one is actively expecting me to prove anything. So I know I’ve had it way easier in many respects than others.
