Here’s a thought. I’m down with the “shut down this country”. Let’s realistically talk what that looks like. In the event of a power grab, citizens can organize not just a “big quit” but a “quit apocalypse”. Workers have the power to devastate the economy by refusing to work at all. This would necessitate community based “looking out for your neighbors” on a grand scale, but ultimately no different than what we already do after natural disasters. If they try to force people to work, then that tips their hand that they are not about freedom at all, just power. It would take discipline and sacrifice of many, but it is worth it to preserve true freedom. Just pointing out it is well within our power to do this, and as you say, the threat of it could be a powerful deterrent.
