I recommend looking into (if you haven’t already) conceptual metaphor theory, especially Lakoff and Johnson’s books. It’s an exceptional theory, IMO, that grounds those metaphors in our everyday experiences, describes how they’re transferred in language and culture, and illustrates just how powerful they can be over our thoughts and actions. Yet somehow retains a level of mystery and awe, in a pragmatic humanistic package.
